NEW MEXICO INSTITUTE OF MINING AND TECHNOLOGY: NMT Separates Office Of Counseling and Disability Services Into Separate Offices

Announcement

New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (New Mexico Tech) issued the following announcement on July 28.

New Mexico Tech is making changes to a pair of its student services to better meet the needs of its student population in new and creative ways, separating the Offices of Counseling and Disability Services into separate, freestanding offices. Both offices, as part of Student Life, will continue to support and coordinate efforts to increase retention, student goals, and academic success.

Both offices operate under the supervision of NMT’s Student Life Office, which is working diligently to partner with faculty, staff, and students to increase connections across campus. The Office of Disability Services, along with test proctoring for students with disabilities, has moved to Brown Hall 20 for the upcoming academic year, while the Counseling Center remains in the Fidel Center.

The Counseling Center focuses on the mental health and well-being of the general NMT student population. The office’s mission is to support the emotional, intellectual and social development of students at New Mexico Tech. Services offered include individual and couple’s sessions, safety assessments, crisis interventions, consultations and outreach. The office supports students to more effectively manage symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress as well as to improve communication, motivation and overall functioning while enrolled at Tech.  Angela Gautier continues in her role as the Director of The Counseling Center.

“Part of this is that with COVID-19, we’ve focused on increasing our ability to provide an environment that allows for improved social distancing in the Student Health Center,” Acting Vice President Dr. Peter Phaiah said. “Plus, this move further provides equal responsibility to each director and better support to each area. They really are separate areas and I want to ensure we provide the best support possible to both.”

The Disability Services office will now have significantly more space, including its own waiting room, and a dedicated area for test proctoring. The extra space in Brown Hall also provides more privacy for consultations and meetings.

The Office for Disability Services focuses on NMT students with a broad range of disabilities. The mission of the Office for Disability Services is to provide equal opportunity and equal access to educational instruction, programs, and activities for all students with disabilities. The office works collaboratively with university partners to foster a welcoming, diverse and inclusive community. Theresa Kappel is continuing in her role as the Disability Case Manager.
