New Mexico Bureau Geology and Mineral Resources issued the following announcement on Jun 1.
The New Mexico Bureau of Geology’s Aquifer Mapping Program is excited to welcome new hydrogeologist and Geographic Information System (GIS) specialist Amanda Doherty. Amanda joins the program with a background in hydrogeochemistry and environmental consulting.
“My main goals at the Bureau are to learn as much as I can from the experienced scientists there and contribute to the tremendous 3D mapping effort that is underway in any way that I can,” says Amanda.
Amanda completed her master’s degree at Colorado State University studying geochemical modeling related to Aquifer Storage Recovery before going to work in consulting. She studied geochemistry of the rock-water interactions associated with the injection of treated water into native groundwater.
In consulting, Amanda worked as a soils lab technician, testing soil properties such as plasticity, soil swelling and condensation capacity, and moisture retention. However, Amanda wanted to work in a position that gives her to opportunity to interact with the public.
“Ultimately, I see myself involved in work that benefits others,” says Amanda. “My position at the Bureau offers me the opportunity to work as a geologist and participate in community outreach.”
Amanda’s expertise in geochemical and hydrologic modeling developed during her graduate studies and work in environmental consulting will be put to good use in her new position with the Bureau, as the Aquifer Mapping Program intends to incorporate more water quality information into their models moving forward.
“I’m really excited to have Amanda join us and grow our 3D Aquifer Mapping team,” says Aquifer Mapping Program Manger Laila Sturgis. “Amanda will not only be helping us complete our ongoing model in the Delaware Basin, but will also be taking the lead in developing a new model in the Central High Plains area of DeBaca and Curry Counties. Creating these models is a team effort and I know Amanda will be a great asset to our program.”
