Albuquerque to add safety precautions to dangerous road in Ventana Ranch

Ventana

Albuquerque city leaders are planning changes for a small stretch of road in Ventana Ranch that has caused several accidents in recent years, KOB4 reported.

Pat Montoya, the director of the Department of Municipal Development (DMD), told KOB4 that city leaders are going to make improvements to the road, such as installing three permanent radar feedback signs that flash and tell drivers their speed, as well as one or two street lights, a flashing yellow sign to warn drivers of a dead end, and more speed limit signs. Montoya told KOB4 that residents had the city's assurance that the improvements would be done on time.

The city plans to have everything installed by March, according to the station. Sandra Garcia, a resident of Ventana Ranch, told KOB4 that she would be vigilant in making sure the city stuck to its timeline.

"I want constant communication," Garcia said.

District 5 City Councilwoman Cynthia Borrego provided a statement to KOB4 regarding the money for the project, saying it would come from her budget.

“As I stated in our interview, I am committed to improving traffic safety at both of these intersections, but I have not had an opportunity to meet with DMD at this point, and review all of their final recommendations," Garcia's statement read. "My city council set-aside would pay for these changes if the cost is reasonable, and considered to improve public safety at these intersections."

Residents have complained about the road for several years, saying it is a dangerous area for speeding. KOB4 reported that last year, two men were struck by a vehicle going 100 mph in the area.

Montoya said the city still has to make sure what it installs will be warranted and beneficial for the area.
